‘Diagnostics’ refers to the diagnosis and management of patients who are referred for assessment, most commonly because of a raised PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test. Once a diagnosis of prostate cancer has been made then the next step is to agree with the patient the best management. Half of newly diagnosed cancers will be slow-growing and it is likely that the cancer will not impact or shorten their life. These patients can be offered ‘active surveillance’.
